Johanna Mauer’s collection “Lost Self-Images” consists of modular knitwear pieces that function as additions, allowing existing garments to be enhanced both aesthetically and practically.
The theme emerged from prolonged feelings, thoughts, and the abundance of decision-making. Each version of the self carries its own thoughts, emotions, and fears, creating overwhelming inner noise. Due to indecisiveness and overthinking, these self-images become anxious, confused, and lost—caught in the blurred boundary between possibility and impossibility.
What makes the collection distinctive are its unique author-designed patterns and the combinability of its cuts. The modular knitwear pieces can be worn layered or separately. Johanna uses only Estonian wool yarn in her collection, helping to minimize the environmental impact caused by transportation.
As a designer, Johanna feels a responsibility to create only with environmentally friendly and biodegradable mono-materials, in a highly considered way and at the pace of slow fashion. Each piece is more like a unique handmade creation than a mass-produced product. She also saves leftover yarn pieces from knitting to use in smaller items and repairs. She consciously chooses high-quality local raw materials and makes full use of them, valuing and prioritizing Estonian wool to avoid excessive material transport.
Johanna Mauer participated in the festival in 2023.
